Seeing one cockroach in your kitchen is bad enough. But the bigger problem is that cockroaches are experts at hiding, and spotting one during the day can sometimes mean there are others nearby.
Before reaching for random sprays, look for these warning signs.
1. Small Dark Droppings
Cockroach droppings can look like tiny black specks or coffee grounds. Check inside cabinets, drawers and along walls.
2. Egg Cases
Brown, capsule-shaped egg cases can be hidden in cracks, behind appliances and in dark corners.
3. Musty Odor
A persistent unpleasant or musty smell can become noticeable when an infestation gets larger.
4. Greasy Smear Marks
Cockroaches can leave dark, greasy-looking marks along walls and surfaces where they frequently travel.
5. Seeing Cockroaches at Night
Cockroaches are primarily nocturnal. Seeing them when you turn on the kitchen light at night can be an important clue.
6. Shed Skin
Roaches shed their outer skin as they grow. Finding these skins can indicate activity even when you don’t see live insects.
7. Multiple Sightings
Seeing several cockroaches in different areas of your home is a much stronger warning sign than seeing a single insect.
What Should You Do?
Start by removing food and water sources, sealing cracks, cleaning hidden areas and checking around appliances.
If you continue finding signs, professional pest control may be necessary.
